PostSubject: Eduard 1/48 IL-2M Shturmovik   Thu Jun 27, 2013 4:00 pm

Started this one on another forum for a group build.

will be painted with Aeromaster Warbird colours, undersides in MM Russian blue ( thanks Geoff! I do remember sometimes!!!) interior color will be......?????!!!!

Day one begins!

The clean up and readying parts for some paint underway

The kit supplied cannon barrels part 182  :hmmm

enough of that! away with the rounded plastic and on with some brass tube

This IL-2 paint looks like Humbrol 145 which will do me just fine, plus it is a close match for the supplied Eduard Pe color

these guys will go with the IL-2 nicely, looks like another dio board setup....

As with the kit cannons - the Mg's were the same = pathetic !!
Brass tube to the rescue

Now we have gun barrels that look like gun barrels

So I can fit these after painting, I made a fairly crude guide for inserting the barrels at the right depth
this won't be seen when the wings are closed up

And a dry fit to check the fit - it will be a tricky process but the fit is ok, all parts close up when pushed into place

Did the tailplanes tonight - fit is damned perfect. ( not shown!)

This plastic is a dream to work with as well.

Bit the bullet and Sprayed the interior in the color that I thought looked the best, after freakin hours of searching and looking at build after build on these damned Ruski birds - every one has an opinion and everyone has the "" right correct"" colors pffffffft = and finding out about this -  if you are not a Russian citizen living there it's very hard to go though dusty pages of info on colors used in this periods.

Plus seeing color photos of these birds that have been immersed in mud and water for 60 odd years! gives what conclusions!!!!!!!!

best guess - whatever looks ok will do!!!

build after builds no matter if IL-2  or Il2m or Il2m3  all diff colors.

So if you decide to build one of these birds - good freaking luck with your color choices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where's the Vodka!!!!!!!!!!

here we are at this point, as you know Eduard gave a bluish grey pit color for the Pe parts and I decided to try to match that rather having green or grey for every thing else which I think would of looked just plain dumb.

Note to self - always flatcoat the colored IP face before gluing to the instrument cluster......

still a wip - but at least some forward movement!

Changed the energy saver globe in my lamp - which again gave me yet another variation in colors!!!

anyways here's where I am after today

Instructions want you to glue the pit floor directly to the centre fuse/wing piece first, join the two fuse halves, then attach this to the floor and fuse/wing piece - at the same time threading the elevator rod (marked with red dots)thru various cutouts in the side panels - DUH!!!

You will need to add some extra flooring in the rear gunners department also - it's short leaving a large gap that can be easily seen

better fix - thread the elevator rod first thru the STB side panels and let hang there,  dry fit the floor to the fuse/wing part, then with the fuse halves joined together with mask tape fit over the floor - you will get a horrible feeling as this crunches into place !!- hold the fuse halves firmly and remove - the floor stays inbetween - Ca glue the STB side only - let dry.

Then glue position the elevator rod to its locating hole the floor, it also attaches to the control column cross rod, let dry.

Then join the fuse halves together - this fits perfect to the fuse/wing piece without the worry of glue on both sides of the fuse halves getting all over the pit details, plus the hassle of threading that rod thru the various traps!.

Final pics of the pit area before closing up, I weathered it with thinned dry brushed Humbrol 32 dark grey and Humbrol 56 Aluminum, some thinned, some straight until I was happy with the result.

masks are still on the pilots bulkhead, and drilled the exhausts out and painted the up as they have to go in the nose parts before joining those up

will glue the fuse to the lower wing part tomorrow.......  :yahoo:

The Il-2 is one of my favorite models. Already built the Tamiya model and take the opportunity to compare the two models. Said me that the fittings were not much, but, I see the dryfit, I do not think anything bad.

I liked the interior.

Thanks guys!

All glued up without not much grief! fit is pretty good on this one, slight gaps on a few joins so sanded with 600 grade while he Ca was just about dry, added a thin line of Ca on some of the joins that needed more, sanded again and that worked out fine.

Primer coat next up to see how the joins look

- the black dots over the pics are on my inner camera lens - which will need to to put in for a good clean -

I added this Pe, almost forgot about it........

I'm just going to do my usual paint base of all silver for the acrylics and not worry about showing paint chipping over the wood sections in yet another contentious ''what color primer was used over the wooden structures'' of this one, I think it's just too much hassles to worry about

masked the flying tank up tonight for the underside blue, hopefully tomorrow will be sunny, did the bombs and rockets and the rear Mg, added the Pe to the dust filter, instructions call for the removal of the plastic filter, then just glue the Pe dust filter cylinder in place - for further strength i sanded the plastic filter down so it fitted snug inside the Pe, painted the plastic filter with Tamiya's rattle can black then dipped it into Mr Hobby Stainless steel, polished it then used Tamiya panel line black, when dried slid the Pe over it and glued it tight, this now can be fitted after the main colours are done.

the silver cap and outline of the filter mesh will be painted accordingly to the aircraft colours

and guessed the colours of the bombs and rockets - plain silver seemed a bit weird.

Time for a rant - please excuse me - don't you just despise assholes that tell you how these birds should be coloured but never build or show one that these experts?? profess to know all about.............

anyway here is the underside ready to mask up,

I've been stuck on the figures for a while, they are getting there

Picked this set up to go with it - it was a Tamiya Russian ''jeep'' with driver or this set!!

It's packed full of goodies!!

outside shots this morning for a closer colour view

I think the true colours will show after all of them are on, I use the silver base for the acrylics, which solves the ''acrylic paint lift'' probs.

all I am doing is following Eduards colour callouts for this, I found Aeromaster warbird Russian colours that are 99 % close to colours they recommend - I think it it sort of plain stupid to paint a Russian bird in RLM colours as some model companies state on their paint instructions - 02 for example for interior.

cheers Geoff, could be a Canadian thing - maybe repairing too many trucks..........

paint is finished, used Aeromaster Warbird colours on the top, Russian earth brown 1192, Russian topside green 1193, Dark grey 9671, Model Master underside blue 2123.

but then - I forgot to paint the canopy..............

back to masking - at least it's an Eduard pre cut set!!!

decals and some weathering being done now,

curiously Eduard gives two sets of fuselage statement? decals but shows only the port side applied, Im very tempted to do the stb side as well otherwise it's just a single Russian star, what you all reckon? decals 24 and 38

Thanks Geoff, it's a neat kit, Accurate Miniatures kit in an Ed box, if it fits as well as the IL-2 I'll be happy!!

comes with a nice coloured Pe fret and masks.

progress from today on and off and tonight.

prop housing now correctly fitted after a horridly scary removal of the part, it sat to high so when the spinner cap was placed onto the prop assembly and fitted into the housing, it fouled on the extended piece at the top of the nose, causing a huge gap. It's now nicely recessed with the correct spacing and spins good.

you can see here the extended nose piece that was fouling the prop spinner

Thanks Geoff, here she is all finished.

A big plus and recommendation for this kit.

This is a nice kit to do, if you can get hold of one you will enjoy the build.

You will have to dry fit that prop assembly with spinner cap fitted when the fuselage is together to avoid the mishap I had but apart from that it's a sweet build.

I posed the rear gunners canopy open, and just found a photo showing a hold strap so will add that later.

Undecided if I will have the pilots canopy open or closed so it's just blu taced at the moment.

I think the brass tube worked well for the surprisingly poor renditions of the gun barrels the kit offered as they give you a good sprinkling of small detailed parts that make this kit a real winner in my eyes.

So here is my ''Flying Tank''

borrowed the base from the Walrus

now I'm off to bed, it's damned early in the morn here!!!!Sleep
