Getting my pic skills restarted, this is what I'm doing:

I want to build a 1st Squadron AVG Flying Tiger in late 1941- early 1942.

Now this means no Disney flying tiger decal/ sticker on the fuselage, no wheel cover tri-color swirlies (3rd Squadron only), 1st Squadron green apple insignia, and a particular shark mouth.  I like the somewhat more round-topped open mouth with the kind of neutral (not angry) staring eyes.  And I have decided on plane #13:

Now... my particular shark mouth came today... and fortuitously with properly shaped numbers to do the plane I want.

Here is where I'm at in the painting (bottom's all pre-shaded, painted and faded):

MASSIVE amounts of puttying and sanding but this Monogram kit REALLY looks like an early P-40.

I have already stuffed an Eduard cockpit (for the Trumpeter kit) inside, Quickboost exhaust stubs, and jazzed up the landing gear, wheel wells, and radiator flaps with more PE.

Tonight and tomorrow will be masks for the hard-edged camouflage and hopefully the second camo color.  I'm slowly coming around to pre-shading, only because it doesn't look TOO terrible here.

Thanks for looking. Smile

Doesnt look too terrible at all Ken, actually looks very good.
I want to have a go at pre shading on cars, see if the same concept works.

Im sure its going to turn out just dandy

First time I'm trying this "Blu-Tak" or "Fun-Tak" method of masking.

I've seen clear wrap added to prevent overspray but my "tak" is still so tacky it's sticking to everything and the clear wrap is kinda not behaving well with all the stickiness.  Do I try to airbrush only where I should?

I dunno. Question

The entire vertical stab and rudder are masking tape masked; much easier but it had near straight line color separation.

The topside wing roundel masks are also masking tape cut with a new #23 blade and a circle template.  The actual Chinese insignia will be smaller and NOT centered in the roundel masked off area, rather they will be positioned more outboard as they were truly applied.

Damn.  I'm too jittery after the masking session to attempt painting tonight. bounce

I just may be a Blu-Tak convert.  My camo definitely passes my three-foot rule, and actually looks pretty good even a little closer.

Awkward camo on vertical stab and rudder is proper.

Looking very respectable - and nice!!

Yes I also use blu tac for allied cammo's, if you find it a bit too tacky, the next time you use it it will be a bit better, our Aussie brand can be reused over and overm, eventually you have to chuck it but it does the job great!.

Keep her going, I also have the very early Mono kit in the Flying Tigers camo.
